REAR VIEW

90 minute single channel video work

Using rear projection photography, Rear View is a 90 minute performance piece in which two women travel a length of road between Broken Hill and Wilcannia in regional NSW. Rear View is exhibited as floor to ceiling large scale projection of an unedited classic Hollywood style two-shot. This unedited shot captures the journey in real time, registering the temporal experience of the performers’ bodies and bringing a sense of liveness and contingency to the final work. The size of the projection combined with the limited depth of the viewing space is such that the spectator is restricted  in her ability to take in the entire image at any one time.  Rear View’s script is shaped out of material from a cinematic archive of moments in cars across the history of Australian and Hollywood cinema, paying attention to dialogue, gesture and forms of emotional expression. These cinematic fragments have been curated into a continuous form that shifts in mood, tone and genre over the 90 minutes.
